“Manhattan Serenade Has Continental Air”
En trist dag som denna, då himlen är grå och ingenting tycks hända, kan det vara roligt att hänge sig åt lite journalistikromantik.
Igår hittade jag ett faksimil som jag bara var tvungen att skriva av en bit ur. Det är en artikel ur den förträffliga tidningen Christian Science Monitor, skriven av tidningens London(sic)-korrespondent William H Stringer (sic!) och publicerad fredagen den 22 september 1950.
(Stringer = journalistjargong för frilansande korrespondent, även på svenska. Detta är alltså som när en konditor heter “baker”, för jag tror att denne man var fast anställd “bureau chief” och att namnet är en ren slump – eller kanske är ordet hämtat från just honom?)
Stringers text handlar om hur New York får sina besökande journalister att genast vilja skriva om staden och beskriva den, även när det kunde ha varit klokt att vänta en vecka eller två för att smälta intrycken. Den hade nästan kunnat vara skriven idag (med undantag för att det finns få välklädda stenografer på Manhattan nuförtiden! och att Korea inte ägnas de största rubrikerna). Här kommer ett utdrag:
“…you see, here on is, landing at this big breath-taking city, this “Baghdad on the subway” , this canyoned dream of the 20th century, and here is this roaring traffic, here are those lovely meals and chocolate milk shakes, here are heady new skyscrapers sprouting, and enthousiastic friends, and bulging theaters, and, to top it all, a foreign ministers conference reached by express elevators climbing 23 to 37 floors.
Exposed to all this, one feels one just must be attuned to the national pulse– and the journalistic fingers just naturally itch to get at the typewriter and write a column. (– – –) It is easy to sense, for instance, a greater degree of physical well-being in America than ever before. (I really mean Manhattan, don’t I?) People are well dressed; just about everybody on this fabulous island seems smartly turned out. Ah, these stylish stenographers on their way to office! And everybody seems busy, very busy. Drugstore lunch-counter attendants continue to be dexterously six-armed. (– – –) Ask for a bacon-and-eggs special, and it is whisked in front of you before you can read the Korea headlines.”
“And what are people thinking about? Today, the American press, like the British press, concentrate its headlines on Korea. Determination on defense girding is high here. Stalin wouldn’t like the things these citizens, of nearly every strate, say about Soviet communism. But many people are just beginning to think through the question of America’s world responsibilities and aims.”
