Gunilla goes to Houston to cover Rita hurricane

I and my collegue Sara Stenholm of the Swedish Radio were supposed to go to New Orleans next week. But now our editors want us to go to Houston – so tomorrow we will fly in there… I’ve spent the entire day arranging with air tickets and hotel.

The Rita Hurricane is supposed to come to Houston early on Saturday, and she has just been upgraded to a 5 (Katrina was “only” a 4 when she hit Louisiana)! It will be pretty chaotic if people are leaving the city - because it is the fourth biggest in the USA.

These are the advice that our collegue Thomas Nordegren – who covered a hurricane in Florida two years ago – gave us:
• stay away from all windows
• don’t use cars
• don’t stay in wooden buildings
• beware for buildings with large windows

Of course, the place where we’re staying has huge windows… “Modern B & B” in Houston

We’ll keep our fingers crossed that there will be some working telephones and some electricity for us! Now I have to go downtown and pick up some rubber boots, water cleansing tablets, and gloves…
