Garden of Eden, no … of Cepheus

Readers of this blog will no doubt get sick and tired hearing about my “hot spots”, i e the places where I manage to get online access with my computer. But you better get used to it, it makes me so excited…

I have felt very unproductive and extremely offline since I came back from the USA. Since I have no broadband/DSL access at home, I have to rely on stone age-style with modem, which a) sucks b) is expensive. Here in the Old Town where I live, virtually noone seems to have a router for wireless access. And Rome was even worse than Stockholm as of lack of free hotspots.

But to my huge relief, I just discovered one – when sitting in my garden (in the block of Cepheus, in the medieval middle of the Old Town)! It’s not great – it’s actually not very stable at all, but it’s there.
I wish you could all see how beautiful it is here: with houses in blue, red, white, yellow, with trees, bushes, roses and other flowers, a fountain – and a blue sky, a warm sun, and cool breezes! A perfect office, indeed.

As soon as I have freed myself from the euphoria of being online here in the garden for the first time ever, or when I run out of battery power, I will start reading the course material that I just received – for a summer course I will attend at Oslo University in a few weeks. Very exciting – but too much to read for July!

  1. Isn’t it funny that the “Swedish IT wonder” seems to have disappeared? Or has it? I mean, most of the present IT companies goes well, but you can’t really notice it in the society. If Sweden should be a player in the international IT arena, free hotspots should be ubiquitous - not only in the very city centre of Stockholm. /Karin

  2. The Swedish IT wonder does indeed seem to have disappeared, albeit from my limited insight. There should absolutely be free hotspots in communities all over the country (I think I have written a post on that earlier).
I once found an article somewhere on the Net on an ambitious inititative in the minuscule city of Nora, which had become all wired thanks to local enthousiasts – and I know that Utö in the Stockholm archipelago is a hotspot, too. In fact, I believe parts of Lund is!
But the article on Nora was several years old, and the city doesn’t seem to have had many followers around Sweden… I think that the Swedish IT discussion was lost on wap and 3G, exactly at the time when it should have been focused on the cheap (isn’t it?) wi-fi technique!
Some PR is needed here. (Earlier this year, I tried to pitch articles on the efforts to make the huge city of Philadelphia into one big hotspot, i e on the interesting discussion on whether wireless access should be a public benefit or be offered by commercial enterprises. I tried with papers such as Ny Teknik, SvD Näringsliv, and a few others – but the editors were fairly un-interested or said they were going to write similar articles in-house.)
I try to preach the benefits of wi-fi technology to everyone I meet, and I realize that a lot people who could really use it – and who might already have the appropriate card inside their computer – don’t even know it exists.
