Wow! Indy 500!
It is so exciting to be here. There will be hundreds of thousands of spectators at the race on Sunday, and many of them are already here. People are wandering around, watching the races, shopping, partying, hanging out…
This is, I guess, mainstream America - i e people that I see fairly little of on Manhattan. The Americans who enjoy t-shirts, sports and barbequeing (and yes, the obesity rate here is enormously high).
I have adopted a stylish “I’m so excited to pretend I am a sport reporter”-look, which includes:
- a khaki green shirt dress, which I really bought for fieldwork in post-conflict and post-war zones.
- black sun glasses
- a white coat
- a silk scarf with flowers from the Metropolitan Museum shop in New York, tied around the neck
- brown sandals
- a khaki-coloured sun hat
- a red Hervé Chapelier bag
…and of course my cool, black rental car.
The sound volume here is incredible! Cars and vehicles are racing in various pre-races, and I can only imagine what it will be like on Sunday…
